Keep the Fire Burning: A Better Way to Network

Networking well is like keeping a steady amount of wood on your fire. If you wait until the fire’s gone out (or until you need career help rather urgently), it’s much more complicated and a lot more awkward to get the flames sparking again.

I see this pattern often in my coaching work. Smart, driven professionals often only reach out to their networks when they’re in a moment of need. It can feel rushed, transactional, or even opportunistic.

But your relationships deserve more respect, and your career is worthy of more regular attention.

Coach Tip: Tend to Your Network

Block a little time each week or month to intentionally tend to your network. Think of it as tending the fire, not just lighting it in a panic.

Here are four small, meaningful ways to make this happen:

  1. Check in on someone who matters to you with a quick email/text or maybe even make an old-fashioned phone call (I keep a big list of the people who are important in my life and in my network).

  2. Celebrate a win or milestone you are aware of someone achieving.

  3. Schedule a walk, coffee, or virtual catch-up just because.

  4. Engage thoughtfully with posts from people you admire on LinkedIn.

The best networks are built on real connections, not convenience. Keep adding kindling, and the warmth will always be there when you need it.
